Easy ATM Withdrawal from Smartphones: Will QR Codes Soon Replace Pin Numbers?

Diebold, national leaders in ATM manufacturing, gave consumers a sneak peek at what may be the future relationship between smartphones and ATMs at the recent Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show.

The ATM manufacturers exhibited prototypes of “mobile wallets,” or smartphone-based payment systems to showcase what ATM banking might look like sooner than we think. It will use a multitouch screen with a swipe-down dial — not unlike the iPhone — to withdraw money; and it’ll give you the option to have your receipt emailed or even texted to your phone!

If you’re wondering what’s going to take the place of the ATM card itself, it’s simple: The user can scan a QR code to make withdrawals!

Only time will tell if this will become a device we come to rely on. In the meantime, if your business is looking for ATM machines for sale, contact us today!

ATM in Spain Offers Free Money

It’s not every day that ATM’s start randomly shooting money at lucky recipients, but this actually happened recently in Spain. Along with free cash were suggestions on how to help others with the money.  Many of the people actually followed through on the suggestions, helping their communities by purchasing sports equipment for children and diapers for pregnant women. As it turns out, the magic ATM’s were all part of the Paying It Forward program, founded by Coca Cola.

Have you taken an opportunity lately to “Pay it Forward?” Tell us about it.

TD Bank recently announced they are updating their ATM fleet along the East Coast. The updates involve replacing current cash machines with ATMs powered by renewable energy sources.

The ATM’s, called “Green Machines,” will be powered by wind-generated power and will feature envelope-free technology that is estimated to save more than 50,000 lbs. of paper annually. Additionally, the new ATM’s allow for images of cash and check deposits to appear on receipts. TD Bank is one of the 10 largest banks in the United States with nearly 8 million customers.

Interesting ATM Facts

The history behind the innovation of ATM cash machines isn’t widely recognized. Did you know that the roots of this technology originated in the state of New York? George Sirnjian is credited with developing a cash deposit machine that was the foundation of ATM technology around the world. The advent of the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a cornerstone of ATM security as well as a banking security measure in general. This security measure was developed by James Goodfellow in 1966. It was in that same year that Japan introduced the first operational cash dispensing machine.

3 Most Common ATM Scams

ATM theft is on the rise in the United States. There are various common scams used to steal funds from ATM consumers. Here are the top three:

(1) Cash claw machines are inserted into the cash draw rollers where money is dispensed. These machines are designed to keep money from being distributed from the ATM.

(2) The Lebanese loop is a card trapping device that uses bent metal or plastic to hold onto an ATM card once it’s inserted. An individual will then approach the consumer who has lost their card in the machine, claiming to have had a similar problem. They will typically persuade the victim to go into the bank or to input their pin again into the ATM while they are watching.

(3) Skimming has become a major ATM scam. Thieves fit the cash machines with card reading devices that collect information from the magnetic strip on debit and credit cards. A pinhole camera or a con artist “shoulder surfing” collect additional information used to manufacture counterfeit cards.

It was commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and designed by the artist duo Allora & Calzadilla. Constant lines formed during the festival, and this ATM was used at four times the rate of any other machine in Italy.

Using the touch screen, the customer reviews the menu, selects from several delicious flavors of cupcakes, and makes payment with a credit or debit card. The customer can see video of the robotic arm grabbing the cupcake (already in a decorative box) and then depositing it behind the delivery door, which then slides open for the customer to retrieve their tasty treat. In 1622, a large, Spanish ship named the Acosta sank with all of its treasure off the Flordia coast. An American treasure hunter named Mel Fisher discovered much of the ship’s riches. However, there is an estimated 200 million dollars of treasure that remains undiscovered. Mel Fisher’s company called “Atocha Dive Adventure” offers scuba divers the chance to search for some of the missing loot. For 2,500 dollars, divers receive guided dives that come with the chance to make the find of a lifetime.
